Guidelines for Coffee Chats

"Here are some guidelines to follow for coffee chats" — reproduced in full.

  • 1. Chats are casual. They will start by introducing themselves and you will do the same. Talk about what you did prior to Kellogg, how Kellogg ties to your goals and why consulting post Kellogg. Probably a 1-2min pitch - doesn't have to be super refined.
  • 2. After intros, floor is generally open for you to ask questions - have around 3-5 questions ready - these can revolve around any topic - from projects in a particular location to activities outside of cases to mentorship etc. Do a LinkedIn search - see whether they are consultants or recruiters and build questions accordingly.
  • 3. You aren't expected to have your location decided, so it's okay to say that you are deciding between 2-3 locations if asked.
  • 4. Use the time to address any queries you have, it's not really evaluative as long as you don't mess it up big time.
  • 5. Dress code: semi formal is good. Just look presentable.
  • 6. Please send thank you notes after the call (within 24 hours)
Part 2

Formal Clothing / Interview Gear

💼 FORMAL CLOTHING / INTERVIEW GEAR.

  • For Consulting/IB: Carry 2 suits (dark shades preferred, no black).
  • Buy formals in India – better quality & cheaper.
  • Carry a padfolio for resumes.
  • Avoid casuals at networking events.

Dining, Gordon's & Manna Aunty

"You can enroll in the on-campus dining services" — the food economics of Evanston.

Siddhaart feedback
  • Very minor correction. The Ventra app is not just for Metra (which is a suburban rail service) but also for the
  • - CTA, which operates the L trains and local buses,
  • - and PACE which operates buses connecting Chicago to the outskirts
  • You also get a Ventra card that is applicable across CTA and PACE but not on the Metra confusingly enough

Academics

6 questions
How difficult is the ACF waiver exam? Are there any practice resources?+

The ACF waiver exam is considered fairly straightforward. If you're from a finance background, it should be manageable. Seniors shared that questions are aligned with basic introductory finance topics. There were no official practice questions last year, but the email listing concepts to be covered is sufficient. Course is much harder than the waiver exam.

Where can I find the topics covered in ACF?+

The email from the registrar includes a list of concepts. As long as you understand those at an intro-mid level, you should be fine. Refer to course note: https://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/serial/academics/core-course-waivers.aspx

Core course waivers
Should I take ACF or Finance 1/2?+

ACF is fast-paced and best for those already familiar with finance. Otherwise, it's recommended to take Finance 1 & 2 for deeper learning. ACF is not as instructional and involves self-study for casework. Recruitment intensity in Fall can make ACF challenging.

Can I take VC/PE Lab in first year if I skip ACF?+

Yes, but only if you take Fin1 in Fall and Fin2 in Winter. VC/PE Lab requires either ACF or Fin2 as prerequisite. Plan your timeline accordingly.

Where can I view all electives and pathways?+

Visit: https://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/academics-research/ and scroll to 'From expertise to impact'. Also refer to: https://entrepreneurship-at-kellogg.notion.site/Entrepreneurship-at-Kellogg-Funding-and-Experiential-Opportunities-1adce9199e4380728a26ef57a5ff0cbb

Academics & Research
Where can I get textbook PDFs or course materials for Finance 1 & 2?+

Fin 1 and 2 both use Corporate Finance by Berk and DeMarzo, which is pretty easily available online (older editions) — the edition really doesn't matter, even your professors will say this. For course packs with cases, we divided ourselves into groups of 6-12 people and shared a pack - these have your assignment cases so not optional in case of most classes.

Career & Recruiting

4 questions
Do we get LinkedIn Premium via Kellogg? Should I get it in India?+

No, Kellogg does not offer LinkedIn Premium. Students suggested buying it using Indian accounts because it's cheaper there. You can also ask friends working at LinkedIn for referral access.

How to set up job alerts on LinkedIn?+

Search for roles like 'MBA Intern 2026' and turn alerts ON. Use multiple keyword filters and bookmark them. Check new roles daily. Zapier, Trello, and Simplify browser extension can automate tracking and resume tailoring.

When will we get access to CMC?+

CMC coaches and resources become available in mid-September. Job alerts for tech roles often come directly from company sites, so don't rely solely on CMS.

What are the rules for networking in IB/Consulting?+

Do not cold-reach employees via LinkedIn. Follow structured networking via KSAC/CMC. Informational sessions, coffee chats, and networking events will be organized. Refer to Stanford's videos for guidance.

Banking & Loans

3 questions
Which bank account should I open — Chase, BoFA, Citi?+

Chase is preferred for customer service and reliability. BoFA is okay, Citi has poor service. Chase requires a $1500 minimum balance, but has a $300 referral bonus. You can delay maintaining the balance by two months after account opening.

Chase referral
How are NU Loans disbursed and what deductions are applied?+

Loans are disbursed quarterly via direct deposit. Tuition (~$27K) is auto-deducted. In Q1, insurance & annual fees (~$6.5K) are also deducted, leaving ~$3.5K as refund. To distribute insurance hit, ask for 40%-30%-30% disbursement.

Can I take an Indian loan in addition to NU Loan?+

Yes, but depends on the bank. Public sector banks like SBI/Union Bank may allow it if you negotiate well. Private banks like Prodigy are more flexible. Note remittance tax risks if repaying from the U.S.

Utilities & Setup

1 questions
How to set up a ComEd account without SSN or U.S. DL?+

You have to first take 2 forms of ID (Passport, Indian DL) and address proof (lease) to the currency exchange and get ID verified. Use the slip she gives you to call ComEd and request a Start Service.

Currency exchange location

Shipping & Parcels

1 questions
What courier service is best for sending 5 to 7 kg parcel from India to Evanston?+

Garuda Vega is a good service. DHL/Bluedart is also reliable
